A look ahead (BearTalk)

Posted July 21, 2008 at 2:30 pm

Now just two weeks away from the start of camp, and there are some things on the horizon. This Thursday is Pac-10 media day in Los Angeles. i will be attending and will provide plenty of information.  A week from today is the annual Bay Area college football media day in San Francisco. Cal coach [...]

A preview (BearTalk)

Posted July 21, 2008 at 2:23 pm

I meant to post this earlier. It is a Cal season-preview by Blue Ribbon Yearbook and ESPN.com. It originally appeared on ESPN’s website about 10 days ago.
There’s really no breaking news here or a new take on things, but just another observation by a national outlet. A couple of things I would point out: I [...]

Talent is never enough (BearTalk)

Posted July 18, 2008 at 2:15 pm

In today’s paper, I took a look at the book “Talent is Never Enough,” somewhat of a self-help book by leadership guru John Maxwell. Cal coach Jeff Tedford read the book after the season and thought it really related to what the Bears went through last season.
For the story, I talked to center Alex Mack [...]

Tedford Tournament of Champions: Cal 2005 vs. Cal 2006 (Bears Necessity)

Posted July 14, 2008 at 6:32 am

And then there were three.
After the decisive 2004 beatdown on a talented yet flawed 2007 team, we’re entering what appears to be the most entertaining matchup of this tournament insofar. A stronger 2005 team angled against a developing but talented 2006 offense. The chronically maligned Joe Ayoob versus the chronically injured Nate Longshore. Marshawn [...]SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: “Tedford Tournament of Champions: Cal 2005 vs. Cal …

Looking back on ‘07: Tennessee (Excuse Me For My Voice)

Posted July 6, 2008 at 9:08 am

The pre-game Storyline:
Cal was seeking redemption from their previous year’s beating in Knoxville. With the game in Berkeley and Cal now knowing what to expect from the hard hitting SEC team that was coming to town, their high octane offense should have a chance to return the favor.
The pre-game reality:
The real story of the [...]

Spring Ball depth Chart (California Golden Blogs: Front Page Posts)

Posted July 5, 2008 at 8:26 pm

We had a question lately about our receivers, since we return all of 10 catches for 153 yards (thanks to LayReylle Cunningham, who provides all of those numbers.  Yes, he is the only wide receiver on the roster with a catch in a game.).  We figured that other people might be curious about our actual players in the midst of a month’s coverage on DumpyMuffs …

Day camp (BearTalk)

Posted June 7, 2008 at 9:53 pm

I dropped by Cal’s fantasy camp today for a couple of hours and, as usual, it looked to be a smashing success. I was told there were about 65 entrants this year, and enthusiasm abounded, not just from the campers, but from the players, former players and coaches on hand.
I sat in on part of [...]

Looking back on ‘05: Oregon St. (Excuse Me For My Voice)

Posted May 25, 2008 at 12:40 pm

After the heartbreaking loss to UCLA, the overall feeling about the Bears was still good. UCLA was ranked 16th at the time of the game after all. Minus the special teams mistake and some only minorly concerning redzone effectiveness issues, the Bears played pretty well, scoring 40 points. With a lowly regarded [...]

Around the Internet (California Golden Blogs)

Posted May 16, 2008 at 10:21 am

So I go away for one week, and my gimmick turns into this.  I mean, how am I supposed to follow that up?  I suppose I could try and do something in the same vein, but frankly, that takes a little more energy than I have at the moment.  Still, if that’s what the people want, that’s what the people …

The curtain falls (BearTalk)

Posted April 26, 2008 at 9:31 pm

Spring practice for 2008 came to a close this morning under a beating sun as the Bears capped off their workouts with a three-hour session that included two long stints of situational scrimmaging.
After spending most of the spring practicing in the brisk early evening that typically saw media types and friends of the program trying [...]

Wednesday practice (BearTalk)

Posted April 23, 2008 at 10:46 pm

Cal’s offense had one of its better practices of the spring, as quarterback Kevin Riley had one his best sessions in a while, as did the Bears’ receivers.
Riley looked more confident during the two-minute drill near the beginning of practice, dealing with the defense’s pass rush to complete short passes to Nyan Boateng and Tad [...]

No Stars, Better Team? (Bears Necessity)

Posted April 23, 2008 at 6:57 pm

As spring moves along, we get the usual, upbeat note, after a season relegated to the Dark Ages.
Sure enough, senior linebacker Zack Follett said he first noticed an uptick in the team’s mood even before spring ball.
“Right when we hit the weight room,” he said.
But this good vibe seems to transcend what happened last year, [...]SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: “No Stars, Better Team?”, url: “http://bearsnecessity.com/cal-football/stars-team/” });

Friday practice (BearTalk)

Posted April 18, 2008 at 9:47 pm

First of all, thanks to all for all of your well-wishes. Now, back to business:
The Bears went a little shorter than usual Friday because they have a morning practice on Saturday. Most of their practice focused on fundamentals and going through plays, with only a brief session of 11-on-11 near the end of the session.
Some formerly injured players – linebackers Zack Follett [...]
