Spring Ball depth Chart (California Golden Blogs: Front Page Posts)

Posted July 5, 2008 at 8:26 pm

We had a question lately about our receivers, since we return all of 10 catches for 153 yards (thanks to LayReylle Cunningham, who provides all of those numbers.  Yes, he is the only wide receiver on the roster with a catch in a game.).  We figured that other people might be curious about our actual players in the midst of a month’s coverage on DumpyMuffs …

Friday practice (BearTalk)

Posted April 18, 2008 at 9:47 pm

First of all, thanks to all for all of your well-wishes. Now, back to business:
The Bears went a little shorter than usual Friday because they have a morning practice on Saturday. Most of their practice focused on fundamentals and going through plays, with only a brief session of 11-on-11 near the end of the session.
Some formerly injured players – linebackers Zack Follett [...]

SF Chronicle: Starting QB job still open question ()

Posted April 14, 2008 at 7:35 pm

That isn’t much insight into the quarterback competition, and that’s because there isn’t any. As Tedford hinted at before spring drills, the job probably isn’t going to be won in the spring, and, now, it’s even less likely.

Incumbent Nate Longshore looked sharp in the first week, but he has a pulled right pectoral muscle that might keep him sidelined for the rest of the spring. …

Spring open practice report (The Cal Football Fan)

Posted April 13, 2008 at 4:06 pm

Yesterday, Cal fans turned out a sizeable crowd for the Bears’ open practice/scrimmage. Here is a report, courtesy of GFang, who attended the event:
Quarterback
[Kevin] Riley- did not get to show off his arm too much . . . but when he threw, was very crisp and accurate with zip. He would’ve been perfect if Calvin [...]

Monday practice (BearTalk)

Posted April 7, 2008 at 9:05 pm

There were several players wearing red jerseys today, meaning no contact and very limited practice. The most notable was quarterback Nate Longshore, who suffered a pulled pectoral muscle on Wednesday, according to coach Jeff Tedford. Tedford said the area is black and blue is swollen and wasn’t sure when Longshore would practice again. He said [...]

Defense steps up in spring ball (The Cal Football Fan)

Posted April 6, 2008 at 5:45 pm

On Friday, the offense had trouble moving the ball in the off-season’s first practice in helmets and shoulder pads. As J.Okanes reported, “neither Nate Longshore or Kevin Riley separated himself” on a day when the defense stepped up.
* Secondary
Apparently, Syd’Quan Thompson took only “minimal reps,” with cornerbacks Charles Amadi and Jesse Brooks getting in [...]

Friday practice (BearTalk)

Posted April 5, 2008 at 8:07 am

The Bears held their first spring practice in shells Friday — helmets and shoulder pads — which meant they hit each other for the first time. You could tell it was something the players were looking forward to because it was a very lively practice.
The defense had a good day as the offense struggled to [...]

Wednesday practice (BearTalk)

Posted April 3, 2008 at 5:59 am

The second installment of spring practice was a lively one, as the defense hooted and hollered its way to a handful of takeaways during team drills.

Cal’s defense forced a few fumbles and picked off a few passes during crossover, when the offense goes head-to-head with the defense. In general, Nate Longshore had a better day [...]

Thompson returns, and more spring updates (The Cal Football Fan)

Posted April 3, 2008 at 12:36 am

* Thompson returns to practice
CB Syd’Quan Thompson returned to practice today (Wednesday), following a one-practice suspension for violating team rules. Coach Jeff Tedford gave Cal fans a scare on Monday when he suggested that the suspension might be indefinite. While the reason for the suspension has not been revealed, Thompson said:

Spring practice begins (BearTalk)

Posted April 1, 2008 at 5:08 am

Injured players who are to avoid contact always wear red jersies at practice. As I settled into my bleacher at Memorial Stadium today for the first day of spring practice, I couldn’t help but notice a familiar face wearing a red jersey during drills with the running backs.
It was none other than Jahvid Best, who [...]

Spring practice opens (The Cal Football Fan)

Posted April 1, 2008 at 12:52 am

Today, Cal’s spring practice began with a few news items of note.
#1: RB Jahvid Best is already well enough to be out doing individual drills in a red noncontact jersey.
Best, who suffered a major hip injury last season, is not expected to participate in the team drills this spring. After practice, Best said:
“I was just [...]

Spring practice preview: special teams (BearTalk)

Posted March 31, 2008 at 8:51 pm

This was a problem area for the Bears last season. Things went sour before the season even started when kicker Tom Schneider suffered a season-ending injury while warming up for the opener against Tennessee. His replacement, Jordan Kay, was inconsistent. He was just 7-for-14 on field goal attempts beyond 30 yards. He’ll need to improve [...]
