Whatever Shall We Do Without Ryan Anderson? (California Golden Blogs)

Posted June 24, 2008 at 2:13 pm

Well, Ryan Anderson is gone, and he’s not coming back.  He gets to live the NBA dream, which is cool for him and all, but what about the rest of us?  Next winter, when we’re still going to Haas Pavilion, rooting on our Bears, what are we gonna see?  Without Ryan, what are we left with?
Well, we’ve got a shiny new coach, …

Ryan Anderson Open Thread (California Golden Blogs)

Posted June 15, 2008 at 7:57 pm

This week is a big week.  Two big turning points for each Cal football and men’s basketball.  On Wednesday, Cal will find out the ruling in the Memorial Stadium Court case.
But first, we find out whether Ryan Anderson will decide to stay in the draft or come back to Cal.  Mike Montgomery came to Cal, because he thought that with Ryan Anderson …

A Mike Montgomery Schedule (California Golden Blogs)

Posted June 3, 2008 at 1:51 pm

Judging by the poll results and the comments on my post from last week regarding basketball scheduling, many of you are dissatisfied with Cal’s current non-conference schedule.  I would share that sentiment.  However, as has been pointed out, much of this year’s non-con schedule is the previous coach’s doing, whereby existing tournaments and home-and-home agreements are being honored.  Perhaps in a …

The Bears Are Roaring: Week of 5/21 (Bears Necessity)

Posted May 21, 2008 at 3:06 pm

Big movement brewing to Gold Out Memorial Stadium (with the students in blue to have a Gold C form the stadium). I was thinking about travelling next fall, but if the fans keep on coming up with great suggestions like this, I might just buy season tickets. I’ll have to ponder it.

Basketball Happenings (The California Golden Blogs)

Posted April 24, 2008 at 10:01 pm

March Madness is over, as is Cal’s part in the annual coaching carousel, but there’s still plenty of action going on down regarding our men’s basketball program.  Let’s take a look.
Yesterday, Cal officially announced the completion of Mike Montgomery’s staff.  As expected, his son John will be joining the staff as director of basketball operations.  [...]

Stanford, Cal and SJSU football: Three teams, two problems - College Hotline - SJ Mercury News sports blog ()

Quarterback: My feeling at the end of the ‘07 season was that Nate Longshore might bolt for a Mormon Church Mission rather than compete for the starting job with bowl sensation Kevin Riley.

Instead, he opted to compete — creating the possibility that their duel would last through training camp and possibly stretch into the season, with neither establishing himself as the clear-cut No. 1.

And now …

3rd Down Offense in the Pac-10 (Bears Necessity)

Posted April 15, 2008 at 4:36 am

Numbers are always fun to look at, and this week I’m going to look at the all-too-crucial third down conversion. While I can’t generate anything as awesome as MGoBlog’s graphs, I can do some basic breakdown of numbers.
The Division I rushing yards per carry ranking is listed in parentheses.

SJ Mercury News: Running backs control Cal’s scrimmage ()

Posted April 15, 2008 at 12:22 am

Cal sophomore quarterback Kevin Riley got the biggest cheer of the day, but running backs Tracy Slocum and Covaughn DeBoskie carried most of the offensive load Saturday during a controlled scrimmage at Memorial Stadium.

Several thousand fans showed up on a sunny and unseasonably warm day to watch Cal’s only spring football practice open to the public.

Bay Area coaching soap opera worth staying up for ()

Here’s the deal. California fires Ben Braun after 12 years of diminishing results, which is nothing special. But after some brief floundering, the Golden Bears hire their old nemesis, ex-Stanford coach Mike Montgomery, thereby causing many brains to melt.

Just for the Record, Monty Ain’t Going Back (Bear Bytes)

I’m sure there was a bit of concern when Trent Johnson accepted the job down at LSU. Why, you ask? Well, because new Cal head coach Mike Montgomery did spend 18 years at Stanford, winning them conference titles and getting them to a Final Four.
So when the current Cardinal coach bolts, I’m sure there has [...]
