Post-practice: Saturday (BearTalk)

Posted August 16, 2008 at 9:31 pm

The Bears had another double-day session today, working out in full pads in the morning and just helmets in shoulder pads in the afternoon.
Kevin Riley continues to come on at quarterback. After a rough first week, Riley seems to have found his groove. During a 6-on-8 drill Saturday morning where the offense tries to score [...]

Post-practice: Saturday (BearTalk)

Posted August 9, 2008 at 9:24 pm

Don’t ever let anyone tell you practice doesn’t matter. The Bears had their first double-day Saturday, and the evening session was a lively one. It culminated with a big commotion at the end of situational action, when the offense and defense engaged in a dispute whether wide receiver Marvin Jones was inbounds after hauling down [...]

Post-practice: Thursday (BearTalk)

Posted August 7, 2008 at 11:31 pm

The primary storyline to Thursday’s practice was quarterback Kevin Riley being given the opportunity to work exclusively with the first team. Working on the hurry-up offense with full squads, Riley’s first pass was a 30-yard completion to Michael Calvin on a wheel pattern down the left sideline.
The sophomore signal-caller had his ups and downs during Thursday’s workout.  His nicest pass [...]

Michael Calvin (BearTalk)

Posted August 6, 2008 at 2:01 pm

I had a chance to talk to Michael Calvin a couple of days ago about the wide receiver corps. He acknowledges the attention they are getting to try to replace Cal’s departed trio of pass-catchers, but said he doesn’t feel any pressure.
“I wouldn’t say it’s pressure. I would consider it a responsibility,” he said. “That’s the [...]

Wednesday afternoon (BearTalk)

Posted August 6, 2008 at 1:43 pm

In today’s paper, we looked at Cal’s biggest uncertainty — the wide receivers. I truly believe this is the biggest question surrounding the team. Yes, we don’t know who the starting quarterback is, but at least we’ve seen both guys on the field. The wide receivers don’t have any experience, and quite frankly, aside from [...]

Post-practice: Tuesday (BearTalk)

Posted August 5, 2008 at 10:03 pm

Monday may have been the first day of practice, but Tuesday was the first day the Bears really sunk their teeth into a lot of things. Cal eased into things Monday with mostly individual drills. Tuesday, there was much more 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 action, as well as a couple of special teams periods.
Highlights included:
–The beginning [...]

Newcomers to watch (BearTalk)

Posted August 2, 2008 at 10:11 pm

With the beginning of training camp now less than 48 hours away, here is a list of some newcomers to watch this fall:
1. Michael Calvin, wide receiver. He came to Cal as one of the more heralded prep wide receivers in the country, and it showed as a scout team player last season. Sometimes, it [...]

Position battles (BearTalk)

Posted July 31, 2008 at 12:03 pm

With the beginning of training camp now just a few days away, let’s lookat some of the intriguing position battles that will take place this fall:
–Quarterback. Duh. We all know this will be the most closely watched competition as fifth-year senior Nate Longshore tries to keep his job away from redshirt sophomore Kevin Riley. Coach [...]

Rey Maualuga Wins the INTERNETZ (And other Pac-10 Links) (Bears Necessity)

Sunday Morning QB, Cal Preview: “The bad news from that perspective is that both the most reliable and most explosive players have all gone on to the pros, and the immediate reserves are not as highly regarded — though Jordan wasn’t a high profile recruit, Hawkins was a four-star prospect out of junior college and [...]SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: “Rey Maualuga Wins the INTERNETZ (And other Pac-10 …

Spring Ball depth Chart (California Golden Blogs: Front Page Posts)

Posted July 5, 2008 at 8:26 pm

We had a question lately about our receivers, since we return all of 10 catches for 153 yards (thanks to LayReylle Cunningham, who provides all of those numbers.  Yes, he is the only wide receiver on the roster with a catch in a game.).  We figured that other people might be curious about our actual players in the midst of a month’s coverage on DumpyMuffs …

Day camp (BearTalk)

Posted June 7, 2008 at 9:53 pm

I dropped by Cal’s fantasy camp today for a couple of hours and, as usual, it looked to be a smashing success. I was told there were about 65 entrants this year, and enthusiasm abounded, not just from the campers, but from the players, former players and coaches on hand.
I sat in on part of [...]

Spring Forward (Bears Necessity)

Hey All.  Since I’ll be posting here on a regular basis, Avinash suggested I introduce myself.  For those of you who don’t know me already, I’m a 2000 Cal alum currently living and practicing law in New York.  Thanks to Avinash for the opportunity to contribute to the discussion and thanks to you for reading.
Congrats to all the Golden Bear draftees, [...]SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: “Spring Forward”, url: “http://bearsnecessity.com/cal-football/spring/” });

Spring Practice recap (Excuse Me For My Voice)

Posted April 28, 2008 at 3:03 pm

I did most of my Spring Practice commentary in the podcasts, but I thought it would be worthwhile to put down some notes in word form as well:
Players with best practices (according to me, anyway):

Nyan Boateng
Michael Calvin
Covaughn DeBoskie
Brian Anger
Tad Smith
Peter Geurts
Ernest Owusu
Syd’Quan Thompson
Rulon Davis (as a leader)

Units that are looking to be strong going into [...]
