In today’s paper, we took a look at tailback Jahvid Best. As much excitement as there is for his return to the field this season, there are unknowns as well.
The Bears will start game planning for Michigan State tomorrow. Apparently, the Spartans are doing the same thing about Cal.

Post-practice: Tuesday (closed scrimmage) (BearTalk)

Posted August 19, 2008 at 10:09 pm

It’s amazing how much information you get when you actually have to depend on other people to give it to you.
Tuesday’s second and final scrimmage of training camp was closed to the media. Reporters were let into the stadium just as practice was winding down. I got inside just in time to see David Seawright [...]

Worthless Cal Predictions (Bears Necessity)

Posted August 18, 2008 at 6:45 pm

Lots of varying predictions about what Cal’s season is going to look like only confirms one thing: Someone on this list is going to look damned stupid.
Phil Steele already set the bar by ranking Cal #2 in the conference, certainly above most normal expectations. However he also had Cal #5 last season, which was as [...]ShareThis

Monday afternoon (BearTalk)

Posted August 18, 2008 at 2:20 pm

Welcome to the last week of training camp. Let’s start off with a few links:
–ESPN.com’s Ted Miller doesn’t break any news, but has a pretty good piece on Jahvid Best. The message? Best is fast.
–Cal is celebrating the end of camp with its annual Fan Appreciation Day on Saturday, but this one has a little [...]

The Bears held a long full-pad workout tonight, putting the finishing touches on the second week of camp. Technically, there is still one week left. But practically, camp ends Tuesday with the team’s final scrimmage of the fall. Wednesday, the Bears will start preparing for Michigan State.
The highlight of Sunday’s practice was the red zone [...]

Post-practice: Saturday (BearTalk)

Posted August 16, 2008 at 9:31 pm

The Bears had another double-day session today, working out in full pads in the morning and just helmets in shoulder pads in the afternoon.
Kevin Riley continues to come on at quarterback. After a rough first week, Riley seems to have found his groove. During a 6-on-8 drill Saturday morning where the offense tries to score [...]

Post-practice: Thursday (scrimmage) (BearTalk)

Posted August 14, 2008 at 11:01 pm

Cal held its first scrimmage of the fall tonight, and there weren’t any major developments. But here are some highlights:
–Kevin Riley slightly outplayed Nate Longshore at quarterback, and has been coming on lately. The past 4 or 5 days, Riley seems to be improving his accuracy, cutting down on mistakes and playing with more confidence. [...]

Time flies (BearTalk)

Posted August 13, 2008 at 2:51 pm

Believe it or not, we’re halfway through training camp. Here’s what has stood out during the first 10 days:
–Nothing has been decided at quarterback, although Nate Longshore probably has a slight edge at this moment. Longshore has completed more passes and made fewer mistakes during 11-on-11 drills so far. That being said, Kevin Riley is [...]

An out-of-town writer stopped by practice today and wanted to know about — surprise — the quarterbacks. Coach Jeff Tedford didn’t break much news, but he did seem to imply that he wouldn’t wait until the first week of the season to name a quarterback if one of them earned it.
“It would be nice if [...]

Fall Camp Recap: Week 1 (California Golden Bears Football Blog - Bears with Fangs)

Posted August 12, 2008 at 11:44 am

So I’m not officially part of the Cal “media” per say. Apparently, Cal officials feel as though stalking Jeff Tedford and falling asleep in Jahvid Best’s car doesn’t really grant me press privileges. Whatever. So what this means is that I?…

The Bears practiced in full pads for the third straight day, and it’s starting to show. Several players sat out with injuries. Cal had trouble finding running backs to take reps after Tracy Slocum suffered a stinger. Jahvid Best ran with the first team, but his backups were walk-ons such as Peter Geurts and Langston [...]
