Post-practice: Saturday (BearTalk)

Posted August 16, 2008 at 9:31 pm

The Bears had another double-day session today, working out in full pads in the morning and just helmets in shoulder pads in the afternoon.
Kevin Riley continues to come on at quarterback. After a rough first week, Riley seems to have found his groove. During a 6-on-8 drill Saturday morning where the offense tries to score [...]

Post-practice: Thursday (scrimmage) (BearTalk)

Posted August 14, 2008 at 11:01 pm

Cal held its first scrimmage of the fall tonight, and there weren’t any major developments. But here are some highlights:
–Kevin Riley slightly outplayed Nate Longshore at quarterback, and has been coming on lately. The past 4 or 5 days, Riley seems to be improving his accuracy, cutting down on mistakes and playing with more confidence. [...]

2008 Cal Football Preview - The Offense (Blue and Gold Sports)

Posted August 13, 2008 at 9:18 pm

System:It remains to be seen how noticeable the difference will be between Frank Cignetti’s offensive system and play calling style and what Jeff Tedford has traditionally done. It’s clear that for the first time during his tenure at Cal that Tedfo…

Tedford impressed with Rodgers (BearTalk)

Posted August 11, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Jonathan took a well deserved night off Monday, so I, Curtis Pashelka, made the trek from Walnut Creek to Berkeley to cover tonight’s practice. Traffic wasn’t bad, actually. Thanks for asking.
I normally cover St. Mary’s College, auto racing and golf, and will fill in for J.O. (as Bear Nation has lovingly nicknamed him) from time to [...]

Post-practice: Saturday (BearTalk)

Posted August 9, 2008 at 9:24 pm

Don’t ever let anyone tell you practice doesn’t matter. The Bears had their first double-day Saturday, and the evening session was a lively one. It culminated with a big commotion at the end of situational action, when the offense and defense engaged in a dispute whether wide receiver Marvin Jones was inbounds after hauling down [...]

Post-practice: Tuesday (BearTalk)

Posted August 5, 2008 at 10:03 pm

Monday may have been the first day of practice, but Tuesday was the first day the Bears really sunk their teeth into a lot of things. Cal eased into things Monday with mostly individual drills. Tuesday, there was much more 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 action, as well as a couple of special teams periods.
Highlights included:
–The beginning [...]

Spring Ball depth Chart (California Golden Blogs: Front Page Posts)

Posted July 5, 2008 at 8:26 pm

We had a question lately about our receivers, since we return all of 10 catches for 153 yards (thanks to LayReylle Cunningham, who provides all of those numbers.  Yes, he is the only wide receiver on the roster with a catch in a game.).  We figured that other people might be curious about our actual players in the midst of a month’s coverage on DumpyMuffs …

Around the Internet (The California Golden Blogs)

Andy Staples (who?) at SI.com named Covaughn DeBoskie as an impact early entry.
Stewart Mandel published his Spring Top 25.  Our Golden Bears check in at…well, they don’t check in at all.  That’s just a little depressing.
Boom goes the dynamite!  Tasteless?  Too soon?
Nnamdi Asomugha is probably the best corner to ever come out of Cal (except [...]

Spring Practice recap (Excuse Me For My Voice)

Posted April 28, 2008 at 3:03 pm

I did most of my Spring Practice commentary in the podcasts, but I thought it would be worthwhile to put down some notes in word form as well:
Players with best practices (according to me, anyway):

Nyan Boateng
Michael Calvin
Covaughn DeBoskie
Brian Anger
Tad Smith
Peter Geurts
Ernest Owusu
Syd’Quan Thompson
Rulon Davis (as a leader)

Units that are looking to be strong going into [...]

The curtain falls (BearTalk)

Posted April 26, 2008 at 9:31 pm

Spring practice for 2008 came to a close this morning under a beating sun as the Bears capped off their workouts with a three-hour session that included two long stints of situational scrimmaging.
After spending most of the spring practicing in the brisk early evening that typically saw media types and friends of the program trying [...]

I attended Spring Practice on Wednesday April 16th. I just now got around to editing together my On The Road Home Podcast, but it was recorded on the car ride home. I’ve also got audio from post-practice interviews with Tedford and Shane Vereen is who was out of the redshirt for the first [...]

Stanford, Cal and SJSU football: Three teams, two problems - College Hotline - SJ Mercury News sports blog ()

Posted April 15, 2008 at 11:41 pm

Quarterback: My feeling at the end of the ‘07 season was that Nate Longshore might bolt for a Mormon Church Mission rather than compete for the starting job with bowl sensation Kevin Riley.

Instead, he opted to compete — creating the possibility that their duel would last through training camp and possibly stretch into the season, with neither establishing himself as the clear-cut No. 1.

And now …

SJ Mercury News: Running backs control Cal’s scrimmage ()

Cal sophomore quarterback Kevin Riley got the biggest cheer of the day, but running backs Tracy Slocum and Covaughn DeBoskie carried most of the offensive load Saturday during a controlled scrimmage at Memorial Stadium.

Several thousand fans showed up on a sunny and unseasonably warm day to watch Cal’s only spring football practice open to the public.

Spring open practice report (The Cal Football Fan)

Yesterday, Cal fans turned out a sizeable crowd for the Bears’ open practice/scrimmage. Here is a report, courtesy of GFang, who attended the event:
Quarterback
[Kevin] Riley- did not get to show off his arm too much . . . but when he threw, was very crisp and accurate with zip. He would’ve been perfect if Calvin [...]
