Catching up (BearTalk)

Posted July 22, 2008 at 2:11 pm

I’ve been meaning to mention that the new Pac-10 blog over at ESPN.com is pretty good. Ted Miller, formerly of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, runs the blog and he’s spent the past week or so ranking the different positions in the conference. Today, he ranked defensive tackles and had Cal’s Derrick Hill at No. 7. I [...]

Day camp (BearTalk)

Posted June 7, 2008 at 9:53 pm

I dropped by Cal’s fantasy camp today for a couple of hours and, as usual, it looked to be a smashing success. I was told there were about 65 entrants this year, and enthusiasm abounded, not just from the campers, but from the players, former players and coaches on hand.
I sat in on part of [...]

Around the Internet (California Golden Blogs)

Posted May 16, 2008 at 10:21 am

So I go away for one week, and my gimmick turns into this.  I mean, how am I supposed to follow that up?  I suppose I could try and do something in the same vein, but frankly, that takes a little more energy than I have at the moment.  Still, if that’s what the people want, that’s what the people …

SJ Mercury News: Running backs control Cal’s scrimmage ()

Posted April 15, 2008 at 12:22 am

Cal sophomore quarterback Kevin Riley got the biggest cheer of the day, but running backs Tracy Slocum and Covaughn DeBoskie carried most of the offensive load Saturday during a controlled scrimmage at Memorial Stadium.

Several thousand fans showed up on a sunny and unseasonably warm day to watch Cal’s only spring football practice open to the public.

Anger Rules! (The California Golden Blogs)

Posted April 14, 2008 at 11:30 pm

There’s been a lot written about Saturday in Berkeley, so a full report would be redundant.  Instead, lets look back to my post on Friday’s practice which nobody read (what, you guys aren’t refreshing our blog at 1AM?) for some insight:
Best is still wearing the red jersey, but you owe it to yourself to come [...]

SF Chronicle: Starting QB job still open question ()

Posted April 14, 2008 at 7:35 pm

That isn’t much insight into the quarterback competition, and that’s because there isn’t any. As Tedford hinted at before spring drills, the job probably isn’t going to be won in the spring, and, now, it’s even less likely.

Incumbent Nate Longshore looked sharp in the first week, but he has a pulled right pectoral muscle that might keep him sidelined for the rest of the spring. …

Open practice today (The Cal Football Fan)

Posted April 12, 2008 at 9:21 am

Today is the open practice (scrimmage), which begins at noon but has burritos starting at 11. The equipment sale is also going on right now — it was scheduled to begin at 9:00. Also, there’s free parking on campus.
This week, the biggest news is QB Nate Longshore has not taken any reps — he pulled [...]

Friday practice (BearTalk)

Posted April 11, 2008 at 10:29 pm

The Bears held a shorter-than-usual practice Friday in preparation for Saturday’s psuedo-scrimmage. Cal’s practices are broken up into 5-minute periods and typically go somewhere between 20-25 periods. Friday’s practice was 18 periods and was mostly a fundamental-oriented practice with limited work with 11-on-11s.
Coach Jeff Tedford said Saturday’s practice won’t be a true scrimmage but will [...]

At spring practice on Wednesday (Excuse Me For My Voice)

Posted April 11, 2008 at 1:51 pm

On Wednesday I was at Spring Practice and got to watch the 2008 Bears in action. I did my first podcast of the year on the way home and will post it tonight after editing it all together. (I would have done it last night but between Church responsibilities on Monday evening, a [...]

Spring practice preview: special teams (BearTalk)

Posted March 31, 2008 at 8:51 pm

This was a problem area for the Bears last season. Things went sour before the season even started when kicker Tom Schneider suffered a season-ending injury while warming up for the opener against Tennessee. His replacement, Jordan Kay, was inconsistent. He was just 7-for-14 on field goal attempts beyond 30 yards. He’ll need to improve [...]
