More Notes From Cal’s First Spring Practice (Bear Bytes)

Posted March 31, 2008 at 11:59 pm

Jahvid Best made his sort-of-return to the Cal football team in its first day of spring ball Monday.
That’s pretty good news for a program that just lost what was supposed to be their No. 1 tailback heading into the spring. Best won’t be involved in anything where he can get hit, but he will be [...]

Spring practice preview: special teams (BearTalk)

Posted March 31, 2008 at 8:51 pm

This was a problem area for the Bears last season. Things went sour before the season even started when kicker Tom Schneider suffered a season-ending injury while warming up for the opener against Tennessee. His replacement, Jordan Kay, was inconsistent. He was just 7-for-14 on field goal attempts beyond 30 yards. He’ll need to improve [...]

The latest on the search - Mark Fox and Trent Johnson (Blue and Gold Sports)

Posted March 31, 2008 at 1:14 pm

Not a lot to report other than scuttlebutt and rumors at the moment. In terms of making direct contact, as of last night based on what I’ve heard neither Mike Dunlap, Mark Fox, nor Randy Bennett have heard from Cal. That doesn’t mean there aren’t int…

Just hanging around, officer (The California Golden Blogs)

Posted March 31, 2008 at 10:00 am

They say that a photo speaks a thousand words.  Well, there is certainly a big, crazy story behind this photo:

So, let’s get to it.  On Saturday, March 29, 2008, over a year since I really kicked it with my BFF, I decided to go check out the tree sit and see what was going [...]

Seventh Heaven (Bear Bytes)

Posted March 31, 2008 at 9:22 am

After sweeping then-No. 5 Long Beach State this past weekend, the Cal baseball team has climbed into the Baseball America top 10. In the latest rankings, the Bears came in at No. 7, the second-highest Pac-10 team behind No. 1 Arizona State (25-1, 3-0 in the Pac-10).

Quarterbacks follow-up (BearTalk)

Posted March 31, 2008 at 5:34 am

One of the things that was really striking as I worked on the story that ran today to preview the spring competition at quarterback is the difference in personalities between Nate Longshore and Kevin Riley. As you could probably tell by the tone of each guy’s comments, Riley views it more as a competition against [...]

Spring practice preview: defensive backs (BearTalk)

Posted March 31, 2008 at 5:26 am

Thomas DeCoud was the heart of the secondary and arguably the heart of the defense, and his presence will be hard to replace next season. The likely best scenario to do so is to break up the competition at rover between Bernard Hicks and Marcus Ezeff and move Hicks to free safety. Hicks started the [...]

Cal Football Spring Ball 2008 Starts Tomorrow! (The California Golden Blogs)

Posted March 30, 2008 at 7:11 am

This is just a friendly reminder that Spring Ball starts tomorrow (Monday), March 31st, 2008.  Spring ball will go four straight weeks.  All practices are closed to the public except for an April 12th practice during Cal Day.
And just for fun, here’s Marshawn Lynch’s Wikipedia page.  Now we all know the wikipedia doesn’t lie [...]

Spring practice preview: linebackers (BearTalk)

Posted March 30, 2008 at 4:23 am

The reason Cal is seriously looking at using more of a 3-4 system isn’t just because the success it had against Air Force in the Armed Forces Bowl. Indeed, that was an adjustment to specifically stop the Falcons’ offense.
But it did provide food for thought. The Bears recognize the linebackers are the strength of their [...]

“A Turn For The Awesome” (Ben Braun Memories) (Bears Necessity)

Posted March 30, 2008 at 12:00 am

Because I only caught the tail end of Cal basketball under Braun (the NBA consumes too much of my life to follow college in earnest), I can really add nothing to personal memories of Ben Braun. I just watched what I saw on TV, and it was kind of like watching paint dry, then repainting [...]SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: ““A Turn For The Awesome” (Ben Braun …

Ben Braun Stays Classy (The California Golden Blogs)

Posted March 29, 2008 at 8:34 pm

Yesterday, TwistNHook mentioned a story about Cal recruit D.J. Seeley, who was shocked by the news of Ben Braun’s firing, and said that he was going to have to reconsider his commitment to Cal.  (FYI, Seeley has signed a National Letter of Intent, but schools often let players out of such commitments after a coach [...]

Three Days In (The California Golden Blogs)

Posted March 29, 2008 at 10:18 am

So, it has now been almost 72 hours since Ben Braun was fired, and the coaching search stories are starting to come in; how is Cal faring?
Well, they’re not hiring Pitt’s Jamie Dixon, that’s for sure.  From ESPN.com:
Multiple sources told ESPN.com that Cal made an attempt to hire Dixon within 24 hours of firing Ben [...]

Spring practice preview: defensive line (BearTalk)

Posted March 28, 2008 at 8:55 pm

Well, now that the delayed start of spring practice is just a few days away, I’m resuming my position-by-position preview. We finished off the offense last time so we’ll move over to the defense today and take a look at the defensive line.
There’s no question this was a weak spot on the team last year. [...]
